Then reality arrives: boxes everywhere, a prepaid meter you&#8217;ve never seen before, and a to-do list that keeps growing. This checklist takes you through everything, from the week before you move to your first month in your new place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you move<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inspect the house one more time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you pay the final balance or carry in a single box, walk through the house again, ideally in daylight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn on every tap and flush every toilet. Look out for leaks and low water pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test every socket, switch and light.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open and close all doors, windows and burglary-proof bars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the ceilings and wall corners for water stains, a common sign of a leaking roof.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take photos and videos of any damage and send them to your landlord or agent, so there&#8217;s a record from before you moved in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get your paperwork in order<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep these safe, both on your phone and in the cloud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your signed tenancy agreement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receipts for rent, caution fee, agency fee and legal fee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phone numbers for your landlord, agent and caretaker or facility manager<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check the electricity meter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the house has a prepaid meter, find out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The meter number and which electricity company supplies the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the meter has an outstanding debt. Some meters carry unpaid charges from the previous tenant, which are deducted from your tokens. Buy a small token first and check how many units you actually receive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How many hours of power the area usually gets. Your new neighbours are the best people to ask.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sort out water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find out where the water comes from: public supply, borehole or well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test the pumping machine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have the overhead tank washed before you start using the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fumigate before your furniture arrives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An empty house is the easiest to treat for pests. Book fumigation a few days before you move, and let the house air out before you bring anything in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Packing and moving day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pack smart<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with the things you use least, like books, decorations and off-season clothes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Label every box with the room it belongs in and what&#8217;s inside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a photo of how your TV and other electronics are connected before you unplug them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pack a &#8220;first night&#8221; bag with toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, a power bank, a rechargeable lamp or torch, bedding, drinking water, snacks, basic medicines and your important documents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose your moving day wisely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Move on a weekend or early in the morning to avoid traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the rainy season, check the weather and cover furniture with tarpaulin or thick nylon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use movers with good reviews, and agree the full price upfront, including loading, offloading and stairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep valuables such as jewellery, documents, laptops and cash with you, not in the truck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your first week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Secure your home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Change the locks and padlocks. You never know how many copies of the old keys exist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the burglary-proof bars and security doors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduce yourself to the estate security or gateman.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save emergency numbers: 112, your nearest police station, hospital and fire service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set up power backup safely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use a generator, keep it outside and well away from windows and doors. Generator fumes contain carbon monoxide, a gas you can&#8217;t see or smell that can kill in an enclosed space. Never run a generator inside the house, in a garage or on a closed balcony. If your budget allows, an inverter or solar system is a quieter and safer backup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn the estate or compound rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Service charge or estate dues: how much, when they&#8217;re due and what they cover (security, waste, water, street lights).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waste collection: who collects it, on which days and for how much.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rules on visitors, parking, generator hours and noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meet your neighbours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say hello and join the estate or compound WhatsApp group.
